Subject: Walpole Swim Team Summer 2010

Hello Team,

First, I want everyone to take note that all practices this Saturday June 16th have been cancelled.  A good deal of the swimmers and coaches will be attending the Bay State Games tryouts at the Hanover YMCA.  Good luck to all!

Next, I wish everyone to know are starting out this Summer season with some exciting changes within the league and on our team as well.

  • As many of you already know Katie Curran has joined as an assistant coach.  Katie started her swimming career with Walpole when she was very young and continued on with the Norwood Recreation & high school teams as a swimmer and coach.  She continues to swim in College.
  • The town of Millis requested admission to our league and was voted in during the coaches meeting on June 9th.  This brings the number of teams in our league to 12.
  • The league has also opted to move away from the A & B Regional championship meet format.
    • We will now have 2 championship meets (Championship Meet I  & Championship Meet II)
    • Each team and all of its qualifying swimmers will attend only 1 of the Championship meets
    • Walpole will attend Championship Meet II on August 7th
    • Rational and Breakdown
      • Both meets will have the same format, prelims & timed finals
      • Both meets will be at the same location, Newton
      • Teams will no longer be split into 2 divisions
      • Parents and swimmers will only have to attend a single championship meet
      • The size of the A Regional was getting too large for the venue and taking too long to complete
      • Swimmers will not be penalized for swimming faster than the cut off time set for the B Regional meet
      • The results of both championships will count toward the records of the former A Regional meet.
      • The determining factor for placement in each of the championship meets will be the dual meet results of the prior season.  2010 placement, based on 2009 standings are as follows:

Championship Meet II

1

Framingham

2

Newton

3

Walpole

4

Dedham

5

Needham

Sherborn

Championship Meet I

7

Canton

Norwood

9

Natick

10

Westwood

11

Medfield

12

Millis

  • Lastly, the one thing that’s perhaps not so good.  Over the last several years there have been more and more challenges and reported infractions of the residency rule our league has.  In short only team members that reside within the town of the team may race officially in dual meets and compete in the championship meets.  These problems have led the league to institute a new residency validation process for anyone that will compete in the championship meets.  For this reason I need all of the Walpole residents to complete the residency form, attach a copy of the documentation requested and either mail it to me or bring it to the desk at practice.

See you at the pool,

Cheryl
